Contents This P&P includes the following main sections:
  • Background
  • Procedure for granting probationary credit

Background Probationary credit for prior service may be granted for service in tenure-track positions at other institutions or for full-time service at the rank of instructor at Southern Polytechnic.  This P&P explains how such credit is determined.

Procedure for
Granting
Probationary
Credit
Probationary credit for prior service is limited to a maximum of three years.  When it is has been granted to a faculty member, it is specified in writing by the president and must be approved by the Board of Regents.  Probationary credit may be granted (1) to new faculty at the time of initial appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher or (2) to current faculty at the time of promotion to the rank of assistant professor or into a tenure-track position.

Step Procedure
1. If a school dean decides to recommend the granting of probationary credit, he or she must write to the vice president for academic affairs (VPAA) requesting approval for granting the credit.
2. If the VPAA approves the request, it is forwarded to the president.
3. If the president approves the request, he or she will define the probationary credit in writing and forward it to the Board of Regents along with the promotion package.
Note:
In the case of a current faculty member, if the promotion does not receive the recommendation of the president or if the promotion package does not advance to the president, no action is taken on the probationary credit recommendation.
4. The probationary credit is either approved or disapproved by the Board of Regents, which is the final authority in this decision.
