Employment of Student Assistants

Background Resources permitting, the university offers the possibility of temporary employment to its students, both to assist them with financial help and to provide the institution with useful services.  This P&P outlines the guidelines for employing student assistants.

Student
Assistants
  • Institutionally employed students, except graduate assistants, shall be employed only on an hourly basis with remuneration for such work to be computed by the hour--unless otherwise classified by Human Resources.
  • Limited and specified individual classifications assigned to such student workers will be recorded in Human Resources.
  • The budgeting of such student employment is limited in each case to the academic term or fraction of a term, as specified by the program head or dean. 

Guidelines for
Reemploying
Student
Assistants
Reemployment of students shall be initiated by the program head or dean through Human Resources, upon recommendation of the student's supervisor. Notice of reemployment for any succeeding term shall be given to the student before the new term begins, whenever possible.

On completion of the work, the student's supervisor shall request an evaluation conference with the student. The results of the conference will be filed in the program or dean’s office. Students seeking continued or future employment will become eligible when the records of previous employment are evaluated by the appropriate supervisor.
