Out-of-State Tuition Waivers

Background Generally, students whose permanent residency is outside Georgia pay a higher rate of tuition.  In some cases, however, waivers are given, as described in this P&P.
Note:
This P&P does not address the topic of tuition reductions for students employed as graduate assistants.

General Policy University System of Georgia policy provides for institutions to waive out-of-state tuition for up to two percent of the equivalent full-time students enrolled.

Such waivers are to be used as follows:

  • One percent (1%) for international students
  • One percent (1%) for special cases, such as excellent out-of-state students in selected programs and/or additional international students

Waiver Allotment
Category & Waiver % Waiver Description
International Students (1%)
  • Up to ten (10) waivers are reserved for students who are in institutional exchange programs and who are recommended by the director of International Programs.
  • The remaining waivers in this category are given to students based on their academic performance.
  • Criteria for the awarding of international waivers based on academic performance are maintained by the vice president for student and enrollment services, and such waivers will be authorized by that vice president.
Special Cases (1%)
  • Up to twenty (20) waivers are reserved for out-of-state students selected by the vice president for student and enrollment services. Criteria for the selection of these students are maintained and authorized by that vice president.
  • Up to five (5) waivers are reserved for out-of-state intercollegiate student athletes. The criteria for the selection of these students are maintained and authorized by the vice president for student and enrollment services.
  • Any remaining waivers in this category are reserved for special cases as determined by the president of the university.
