Definition of
Semester System
  • In accordance with University System of Georgia guidelines, Southern Polytechnic State University shall be on the semester system.
  • Two regular semesters are not to be less than 16 calendar weeks each, with allowances therein for registration, instruction, examinations, and reporting of grades to the registrar.
  • A semester will normally include 15 full weeks of instruction (a minimum of 75 class days). A minimum of 750 minutes of instruction is required for each semester credit hour.
  • The scheduling of summer semester work may be flexible but with the stipulation that all summer semester work be equivalent to that done in other semesters with respect to instructional time.

Uniform USG
Dates
The earliest beginning and latest ending dates for each semester are determined by the chancellor and observed by all institutions in the University System of Georgia (USG).

Religious Holiday
Schedule
USG policy mandates that institutions in the University System shall not schedule semester registration or the first day of classes on dates that conflict with major religious holidays.

Process for Setting
the Calendar
After consulting with the Faculty Senate and the vice president for academic affairs, the registrar recommends an academic calendar for approval to the president of the university.
