To prepare for professional careers in the nuclear industry
Nuclear technology has played an important role in a number of industries ranging
from power to medicine, food, defense, research and nondestructive testing. Recently,
a confluence of factors including increased demand for electricity, concerns about
climate change, vulnerability to sourcing, and economics of fossil fuel have resulted
in a revival of interest in the nuclear power industry. In response to this interest,
Southern Polytechnic State University has established the Center for Nuclear Studies.
The mission of the Nuclear Studies Center at SPSU is to spearhead the implementation
of educational and research programs that result in preparing the next generation
of the nuclear industry professionals.
Nuclear power is the most prominent and visible sector of the nuclear industry. Electricity
produced from nuclear reactors has proven to be one of the safest, cleanest, and most
sustainable forms of base-load energy capable of meeting the electrical demands of
the public. The Southeast region has particularly benefited from this reliable source
of energy. Consequently, a majority of the next generation of nuclear plants are slated
to be built in this area. At this time sixteen nuclear power plants are planned to
be built in Georgia and the surrounding states. Once underway, these projects will
create a substantial demand for high-paying technical and professional positions.
SPSU is committed to supporting the growth of the nuclear industry by offering undergraduate
academic courses in nuclear engineering and professional workshops through the continuing
education department. These courses are designed to provide the participants with
the knowledge and the practical skills that are needed to address the industry's challenging
issues. Whether enrolled in the continuing education program or taking an academic
nuclear course, every student will have the opportunity to become prepared for an
exciting and rewarding career in the nuclear industry. For further information about
these offerings, please visit the corresponding sections of the website.
