VPAA selected as next president of SUNY Canton

Zvi Szafran

MARCH 24, 2014 – Congratulations to Dr. Zvi Szafran, vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of chemistry since 2005, who is being recommended by State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Nancy Zimpher to serve as the next president of SUNY Canton in northern New York.

The SUNY Board of Trustees will meet on April 3 to vote on Dr. Szafran’s appointment.

SUNY Canton has a mission similar to that of SPSU, with a focus on career-driven bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees and certificate programs, and quality, hands-on programs in engineering technology, health, management and public service. Just as at SPSU, SUNY Canton faculty members are noted for their professional real-world experience in addition to their academic credentials, and the student body is a diverse mix of races, ethnicities and backgrounds.

“Dr. Szafran is an ideal candidate to be SUNY Canton’s next president,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “Throughout his career, Dr. Szafran has developed a keen sense for the needs of students and an ability to enhance academic programs and services to meet those needs. Having served for nearly a decade as a member of the leadership team at a technology college within a state system of higher education, Dr. Szafran’s experience and vision align well with SUNY Canton’s mission as well as SUNY’s strategic priorities.”

"We're very proud of Dr. Szafran's accomplishments at SPSU and excited for the opportunity awaiting him at SUNY Canton," said President Lisa A. Rossbacher.
