Men’s soccer team climbs to No. 2 in NAIA national poll

Soccer action shot

SEPT. 18, 2013 – The SPSU men’s soccer team is off to a great start for the 2013 season. The Hornets are 4-0-1 so far, propelling the team up to a No. 2 ranking nationally in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 poll released on Tuesday.

In the NAIA preseason poll, SPSU ranked eighth, and in last week’s first poll of the season SPSU was in third place. The No. 2 spot matches the highest ranking in the seven-year history of the SPSU soccer program.

A panel of head coaches representing each of the NAIA conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups, votes on the poll, which can be viewed at www.naia.org.

The Hornets belong to the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). Other SSAC teams appearing in the poll include No. 6 Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss., No. 13 Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., No. 17 University of Mobile (Ala.), No. 22 Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., and No. 30 Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C.

The Hornets are on the road this Friday for their SSAC opener against Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. The next home game – against Belhaven – is scheduled for Thurs., Sept. 26, at 4 p.m.
