Sigma Nu chapter earns leadership award from national organization

Sigma Nu letters

JULY 31, 2013 – The national fraternity Sigma Nu has recognized SPSU’s Iota Pi Chapter with the Excellence in Values-Based Leadership Award in recognition of the many service-oriented projects completed by chapter members as well as their active involvement in campus activities.

Sigma Nu encourages its members to become engaged citizens through service to their local communities. During the 2012-13 school year, Iota Pi helped to put on events such as the city of Marietta’s annual Halloween Happenings and Easter egg hunt, St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Cartersville and the Hope for Christmas toy and food drive. The chapter also assisted Union City Parks and Recreation officials with a restoration project.

“Sigma Nu is a role model for the Greek community in more ways than one,” said Anne Montgomery, coordinator of fraternity and sorority life at SPSU. “Iota Pi is the largest chapter of a Greek organization on campus, and they also have the highest retention rate. Sigma Nus can be found holding positions in student government, the Order of Omega and the Interfraternity Council’s Executive Committee as well as serving as resident assistants. They also host the annual Welcome Week Bonfire, attended by hundreds of students, by collecting Christmas trees from local businesses and donation sites.”
