The SPSU men’s soccer team will make its fourth straight appearance at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men’s Soccer National Championship and will play the opening-round game on their home field this coming Saturday (1 p.m., Nov. 17, vs. Spring Arbor (Mich.) College).
Despite falling short in the final seconds of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship to Auburn University at Montgomery, SPSU earned one of eight at-large bids to the NAIA tournament because the team ranked eighth nationally in the final NAIA Men’s Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) of 2012, The Hornets are seeded No. 8 seed in the tournament.
The 32 teams in the NAIA national tournament are comprised of 24 automatic qualifiers awarded to conference/independent/unaffiliated group tournament and regular-season champions. The rest of the field is made up of eight at-large teams, selected by the final MRPI. The 32 teams will play at 16 locations on various campuses in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round this Saturday. The winners of each of these games advance to the 54th annual NAIA national championship final site in Montgomery, Ala., from Mon., Nov. 26 through Sat., Dec. 1.
Southern Poly is 13-5-1 overall and finished tied for fourth place in the SSAC at 7-3-1. The Hornets, as the No. 5 seed, were the SSAC Tournament runners-up.
