AUG. 5, 2013 – SPSU’s 2013 soccer season gets underway with a much-anticipated non-conference game at home on Fri., Aug. 23, against Bethel College of Mishawaka, Ind. The match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Nuesoft Technologies Field.
Kom Momeni is entering his seventh season as soccer coach at SPSU. He led the Hornets to their second consecutive National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Elite Eight appearance last year, and the team ranked eighth nationally in the 2012 NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll. Under Momeni, the Hornets have made four trips in a row to the NAIA national tournament, where they made it to the quarterfinals in 2009 and 2010.
After opening the 2013 season with five non-conference matches, the Hornets have 11 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) matches, beginning with Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., on Sept. 20. The SSAC Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Poll, released on Aug. 5, has SPSU finishing in fourth place among 12 squads this season.
In 2013, SPSU will play four teams that qualified for the NAIA national event last season, including national champion Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss., and second-place finisher, University of Mobile (Ala.), which are both members of the rugged SSAC.
“Bethel’s Indiana location doesn’t lend them to play a lot of big-time NAIA teams so they don’t get the national recognition they deserve, but they’re a quality team. In our conference, we’ve got the defending national champs Belhaven, the defending runner-up, Mobile, and AUM [Auburn University Montgomery in Ala.], the No. 5 team in the country,” Coach Momeni said. “The non-conference schedule is meant to prepare us for the conference, and we think we’ve scheduled some really nice games.”
