MAY 14, 2014 – With two wins under its belt in this week's NAIA National Championship Opening Round in Daytona Beach, Fla., the top-seeded SPSU baseball team is just one game away from the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.
The Hornets, ranked ninth nationally, scored a convincing 20-6 win over No. 5-seeded Louisiana State University at Alexandria on Monday night. On Tuesday afternoon, they defeated No. 2 seeded Embry Riddle Aeronautical University – host of the Daytona Beach Bracket – by 4-1, with senior Zach Smith (above) pitching all nine innings. SPSU has won 20 of its past 22 contests and has improves to 44-16 overall.
Today at 4 p.m., SPSU will take on the winner of a 12 p.m. game between Embry Riddle and Tennessee Wesleyan College of Athens for the tournament title.
The first round of the national championship is being played at nine sites across the country. Each site features a five-team, double-elimination tournament with the winners joining World Series host Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho May 23-30.
