SPSU deans heading north and south to other posts


JUNE 3, 2014 – Two SPSU deans have announced that they have accepted leadership positions at other universities and will be leaving in late June/early July.

Dr. Han Reichgelt, dean of SPSU’s School of Computing and Software Engineering since fall 2007, has been appointed regional vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of South Florida, Saint Petersburg, and will start work there in mid-July. Dr. Tom Nelson, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences since fall 2011, is headed to Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn., where he has been appointed the new dean of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Reichgelt earned his Ph.D. in cognitive science from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K., and a master’s degree in philosophy and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Nijmegen, Netherlands. Before his arrival at SPSU, he held appointments at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, the University of Nottingham in England and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Dr. Nelson earned his Ph.D. in ecology and his master’s degree in zoology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Illinois State University in Normal. Prior to coming to SPSU, he served for 10 years as the director of the Fisheries and Wildlife Ecology program and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Arkansas Tech University in Russelville. He left there to become director of environmental biology at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, where he was a member of the biology and environmental sciences faculty for 14 years. Dr. Nelson subsequently served as chair of the Biology Department at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega.
