DEC. 19, 2013 – Marty Lovrich, head coach of the SPSU baseball program, has announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2014 season, which opens Feb. 1. The Hornets enter the campaign ranked 17th nationally, according to the 2014 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll.
They are scheduled to play 55 scheduled regular-season games of which 16 will be against teams that are noted in the NAIA preseason coaches’ poll or appeared in last year’s NAIA national tournament.
The season opens with a three-game, non-conference series at home with No. 15-rated Lindsey Wilson College of Columbia, Ky. The Hornets also play a pair of non-conference contests versus top-ranked and defending national champion Faulkner University from Montgomery, Ala., later in the season and two games against eighth-rated Tennessee Wesleyan College out of Athens, Tenn.
The Hornets will face Georgia Gwinnett College three times and then host Tennessee Wesleyan, the 2012 NAIA national champ, before beginning play in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC).
SPSU has 25 contests scheduled outside of the conference – the three games with Lindsey Wilson, four against Georgia Gwinnett, two versus Tennessee Wesleyan and two with Faulkner. Other non-conference opponents include: NCAA Division II Georgia Southwestern State University, Americus; Talladega (Ala.) College; and Reinhardt University of Waleska, Ga.
“We set the schedule up, especially with as many new guys as we’ve got this year, to push them to the limit prior to that first conference weekend,” Lovrich said.
That weekend is Feb. 14-15 when the Hornets travel to Pulaski, Tenn., to take on Martin Methodist College in a three-game series.
SPSU hosts a doubleheader with Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, Feb. 1, which is when the University celebrates homecoming. The first game is set for 12 p.m. at Sir Walter J. Kelly Sr. Memorial Field.
