Southern Polytechnic State University celebrates Black History Month with a variety of activities ranging from fine arts to movies -- and history to relationships. Sponsoring organizations making the events possible include SPSU's Office of Minority Affairs (OMA); the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE); Alpha Phi Alpha; Zeta Phi Beta; and Kappa Alpha Psi.
February 17 kicks off the commemorative celebrations with the exhibition of an African American Art Display from the Fine Arts Gallery of Marietta in the university's Student Center Lobby between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
A roundtable discussion on "Relationships" will be led by SPSU's Dr. LaJuana Cochrane on February 19 in the Howell Residence Hall. To promote relaxation and stress reduction, there will be "Blue Spadell" massages and backrubs available.
Acoustic Rock and Urban Folk Performer "Lea" will present a concert on February 20 at 5 p.m. in the Student Center.
From February 24 through February 28, the Student Center Theater and Movie Room will feature the movie "The Hurricane", staring Academy Award Winner Denzel Washington.
On February 27, "Black History Month Quiz Bowl" takes place in the Student Center from 12 to 1 p.m.
The activities culminate with "UMOJA" -- Black History -- presented at the Student Center Theater from 8 to 10 p.m. on Febuary 28.
