Southern Polytechnic team takes fourth place in ASCE Regional Competition

Southern Polytechnic State University's Civil Engineering Technology team placed fourth overall in the recent American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Regional Competition on the Auburn University campus. Thirty-six SPSU students competed in nine of the ASCE categories.

The Concrete Bowling Ball team of Nathan Heinlein, Andrea Donelli, John Payne and Marc Rader won first place in their division, while the Steel Bridge team of Johnny McElreath, Matt Gilstrap, Michael Monk, Bradley Parks, Anthony Spagnoli, Ryan Mauriello, Kimberly Walker, Rob Phillips and Matt Schuster took second prize. Both the Geotechnical and the Balsa Wood Bridge teams took home third place. Southern Polytechnic also finished among the top eight teams in the Concrete Canoe, Surveying, Environmental, T-Shirt and Mystery categories.

"I am very proud of our students in each of these areas," said Tim Zeigler, department head of Civil Engineering Technology. "They represented SPSU very well against some formidable competition."

SPSU's Steel Bridge team will move on to the National Steel Bridge Championship Memorial Day weekend in Clemson, South Carolina, according to Associate Professor Michael Orlandella, advisor to the Steel Bridge team.
