Southern Polytechnic State University has been authorized by the Board of Regents to offer a cutting-edge new degree - a Bachelor of Science in International Studies with a concentration in global technology.
Although degrees in international studies are common, the specialty in global technology makes SPSU the only institution in the state offering this unique combination.
"This is a bold concept. The degree will produce a new kind of graduate - one designed for the 21st century," said Charlie Weeks, head of SPSU's social and international studies program. "We are seeking to produce graduates who not only understand the political and economic processes of globalization, but also possess technological skills and knowledge that allow them to deal with new demands of global economy. This is the way the world is now geared. The spread of technology in the world has necessitated this kind of curriculum. "
Graduates will be prepared for employment in international business, the travel and transportation industries, pre-law, government, public policy and the military, according to Weeks. The interdisciplinary degree combines components of political science, history, science, psychology and society with computer, technology or electrical engineering skills.
"Companies that will employ our graduates will be global ones, so it is necessary for their employees to understand the political, economic, cultural and technical context of dealing with foreign business," said Weeks. "Such employees must possess technological competencies and a global perspective that is vital to multi-national corporations."
According to Weeks, the state of Georgia has become a global hub. "Georgia is a vibrant and global business center, one with almost four dozen countries represented in the state with consular, trade, or chamber of commerce offices. The state is also the third largest exporter in the Southeast."
The new degree will begin fall semester of 2002.
