Abstract

With the increasing international composition of China’s higher education, intercultural management at universities is imperative. To manage efficiently, administrators should understand the differences between different cultures. The author of this paper has chosen some results from questionnaires, which she used as material for her Master’s Degree thesis, to analyze the differences of the communicative methods, and the different views of culture and value between Japanese and Chinese students, from the aspects of “Refusing Methods” and “Praising methods”. The author believes that Japanese cherish harmony and pay much attention to collectivism. Therefore, the administrative staff at universities should use unique communication methods with Japanese students to achieve effective management of them. At the same time, the author points out cultural differences are one of the factors that lead to the present conflicts between Japanese and Chinese people. For this reason, communication and cultural understanding should be enhanced between the Japanese people and Chinese people. Finally the paper suggests that as an administrator at universities, one should know the variety of different culture, train in awareness of intercultural management and improve the ability of intercultural management.
