Manufacturing Week success

The
SPSU
Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
hosted a successful Manufacturing Week on April 6-9.
Mechanical Engineering Technology faculty advisor,
Dr.
Simin Nasseri, along with Jim Dyal, Trent Phillips
and Kelly Gray, organized this diverse program designed to
increase awareness of manufacturing engineering as a career
path.
The event was well attended by
students and faculty, as well as several campus officials
seeking up-to-date information. Events included two cookouts
for networking, an airplane competition, a tour at
Lockheed-Martin and two seminars.

April 2009:
SPSU students
win at American Society of Mechanical Engineers conference

Thirteen students from the
SPSU chapter of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ASME) attended the 2009
Student Professional Development Conference held at the
University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa on April 3-5.
Mechanical Engineering Technology junior, Chris Saleh and
senior, Thien Nguyen, participated in a Mystery Design
competition, winning first prize for their team. The contest
required randomly assigned teams to construct a support
structure to carry a container of liquid for a distance
without spilling.
The purpose of the conference
is to introduce students to the ASME and provide networking
opportunities as well as a forum for technology transfer for
undergraduate and graduate students.

FSAE Team wins competition
Congratulations to SPSU’s Formula Society of Automotive
Engineers’ (FSAE) Race Team for earning first place
in all events at the 2nd Red Bull sponsored FSAE race
competition at Barber Motor Sports Complex in Birmingham
this past January. Dr. Ken Fleming, Mechanical Engineering
Technology department, is the faculty advisor for the team.
The competition tests the car’s acceleration and braking,
cornering, overall road performance and endurance.
March 2008:
Dean Jeff Ray
receives award
Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Ray, dean of the School of
Engineering Technology and Management, on receiving a Best
Session award at the 2009 American Society of Engineering
Education (ASEE) Conference on Industry Education
Collaboration held in Orlando last month. The award was given
for his session held at the 2008 conference, of the same name,
in New Orleans and was presented by the Cooperative Education
Division (CED) of ASEE. The title of the award-wining session
was "National Academy 2020 - Engineering Skills Needed for
the Future."
Feb 2009:
Dr. Kenton Fleming obtains PE License
Congratulations are in order for Dr. Kenton Fleming of the
Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) department for
obtaining his certificate of Professional Engineer (PE). Dr.
Fleming adds this professional licensure to his B.S., M.S, and
Ph.D. in mechanical engineering.
Dr. Fleming has been teaching at SPSU in the MET department
since 2004 and is also the advisor to the Southern Poly FSAE
(Formula Society of Automotive Engineers) Race Team.
Before joining academia, Dr. Fleming worked in industry as
a researcher and consultant, particularly in the field of
computational fluid dynamics. He developed computer code
during his doctorate studies to include the effects of surface
roughness in computer calculations of fluid dynamics.
The requirements for obtaining a PE license are stringent
and exhaustive. There is an educational component whereby a
four-year degree (minimum) issued by an ABET (Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited program is
required, in addition to several years of progressively
responsible engineering experience. Once these requirements
have been fulfilled, a candidate must also pass a written
examination on the principles and practice of engineering.
MET department congratulates Dr. Fleming for achieving this
prestigious certification and continuing to advance personally
and professionally in the engineering field.
