As illustrated above, a given tiling can often be composed into a tiling consisting of larger tiles by erasing some tile edges. A given tiling can always be decomposed into a tiling with smaller tiles by chopping up existing tiles. Composition is a tool that has been used to show that the Penrose tilings are not periodic.
