One must ask for criteria to decide whether two tilings are equivalent. A topologist would say that the two tilings above are equivalent because they can be stretched into each other. However, from the algebraist's point of view they are not equivalent: the tiling on the left has vertical and horizontal lines of reflections that give it a symmetry that the one on the right lacks.
