Finding Criticism

The following resources are referred to as "libraries of literary criticism." They include excerpts from critical writings published in books, scholarly journals, and newspapers. Check GIL to see if the library owns the books and periodicals identified. In some cases, the electronic test of articles may be available in JSTOR or one of the GALILEO databases.

Classical and medieval literature criticism. Detroit, MI: Gale Research, 1988- 

Library has: v. 1-40.

Covers literature from antiquity through the fourteenth century. There are entires for major authors, anonymous works of literature, such as Beowulf, and for types of literature, such as Arthurian legends. Each entry includes a brief essay and selections from critical writings. Each selection gives the bibliographical reference to the full critical study.

Contemporary literary criticism. Detroit: Gale Research, 1973- 

Library has: v. 1-107.

Provides excerpts from critical essays published in books, scholarly and popular periodicals, and newspapers. To be included in this series, authors must still be living or have died since 1960. Each excerpt gives the bibliographical citation to the full critical study.

Covers authors who died between 1900 and 1960. Each entry presents a survey of the critical writing on the author, including a brief biographical introduction, a list of principal works, excerpts from the critical writings about the author, bibliographic citations to the full critical studies, and an annotated bibliography of additional readings. Occasionally, entries are devoted to just one of an author's works.
