September 17, 2008 -- Tenth Anniversary -- SPSU Authors'
Reception.
Johnson Library acknowledged the written works of
our professors, staff members and students by putting on display
the publications that were produced since last year’s event.
Featured were works by students in Construction Management and
in the Honors Program; staff members such as Jeff Hughes who provided
an article and a newsletter for the Career and Counseling Center;
Library faculty member, Aaron Wimer, provided his newsletter,
“Dead Tree Notes.” Teaching faculty members wrote
a host of papers that had been presented before academic bodies
from Denmark and Spain to Australia. We appreciate and honor all
of the publications that were provided and especially those which
were contributed to the Archives for future reference.
Vice President Zvi Szafran gave an enlightening
speech on the significance of writing using illustrative quotes
from famous writers. Then, he acknowledged the individual accomplishments
of many of the 61 authors whose works were on display in the Rotunda.
President Lisa Rossbacher, who initiated the idea
for this event in 1999, was present. She introduced the group
to her mother, Mrs. Rossbacher, to whom she gave credit for her
own love of reading and her intellectual development from childhood.
The Library Director, Dr. Mills, unearthed from
the archives “The Southern Tech Hymn” which was written
in 1961 by Professor Robert Hayes. On September 17th, the score
to the hymn was performed in the Rotunda by the archivist, Hyun
Chu “Leah” Kim. Mills invoked the group to consider
a contest to expand and update the lyrics to the song. Prof. Mark
Stevens volunteered to work with the archivist and contact the
Hayes family in this effort.
