Acquisitions

The collection development policies of the library are designed to support the instructional programs of Southern Polytechnic State University. Although we also acquire general and specialized works for the Reference Collection and materials to support cultural enrichment and leisure reading, highest priority is given to materials needed for teaching. Since scientific and technical publishing is concentrated in journal literature, most of our acquisitions budget is spent on serial publications. Each program, however, is also given a small annual allocation for books, by a formula which factors hours taught, course level, and graduate programs.

If you have questions about the acquisition or processing of materials, contact Yongli Ma, Assistant Director for Technical Services/Acquisitions Librarian, (678) 915-7473 (e-mail: yma in the spsu.edu domain).

Selecting Materials

Primary responsibility for selecting materials to support the curriculum rests with faculty members. One member of each academic program serves as representative to the Library Committee, which advises the library on matters of policy and the allocation of funds. Requests for purchase of materials for the library should be submitted to your Library Committee representative.

From time to time, the Library Committee reviews the library's serial subscriptions to determine which may no longer be needed and if subscriptions to new titles should be entered.

Thesis Binding

Guidelines

For theses: The Lawrence V. Johnson Library will retain two copies of all Southern Polytechnic State University theses, one in the Archives and one in the circulating collection. One copy should be on acid-free paper for the SPSU Library Archives, and one copy on 20 lb. paper for the Library’s circulating collection.

For master’s papers: Only one copy on 20 lb. paper is retained for the Library’s circulating collection. After 5 years, these master’s papers may be weeded to make room for incoming master’s papers.

The Library also binds one copy of each thesis/project for the department of origin. All additional copies for students, etc., are bound at the student's expense. A check or money order should be made out to SPSU Library, in the amount of $8.25 per copy. We also accept cash, but not credit or debit cards.

The department of origin or the author of the thesis/project is responsible for delivering the unbound copies of the paper to the Acquisitions department of the Library, located on the lower level of the Library. The department should supply the Library with the number of copies to be bound for the department, faculty, and the student(s).

Copies of thesis/project must be submitted with the "Department Acceptance Form" with approved signatures. The following information should be provided as well: author, title, department, and the students' telephone number and/or email address.

The Acquisitions Librarian will inform the student when the bound thesis/project has been returned from the bindery - this usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks. Bound items can be picked up at the Acquisitions department.

If no contact information was supplied, or the Librarian cannot reach the student, the bound volumes will be sent directly to the department.
