Acquisition of Materials
The Johnson Library is designed to support the
instructional programs of Southern Polytechnic State University.
Although the library acquires general and specialized materials
for the Reference Collection and to support cultural enrichment
and leisure reading, highest priority is given to materials needed
for teaching. Since scientific and technical publishing is concentrated
in journal literature, most of our budget for library materials
is spent on serial publications. Each department is given an annual
allocation for books, by a formula which factors hours taught, course
level, and graduate enrollment.
Selecting
Primary responsibility for selecting materials to support instruction
rests with faculty members. One member from each department serves
as representative to the Library Committee, which advises the library
on matters of policy and the allocation of funds. Requests for purchase
of materials for the library should be submitted to your Library
Committee representative.
From time to time, the Library Committee reviews the library’s
serial subscriptions to determine which may no longer be needed
and if new subscriptions should be entered.
