Use of Results by Course

Year: __FALL 2007__

Category: Area D2, Laboratory Science    Discipline: Physics 1112K

  1. Learning Outcomes
  • Explains and interprets physical situations as stated in a word problem
  • Identify the physical laws appropriate to the physical situation at hand.
  • Predict the behavior of representative physical systems using mathematics as a tool.
  • interpret the outcome of a physical system
  • Use various types of data collection tools for the experimental investigation of physical laws.
  • Represent physical systems in multiple representations:  i.e. mathematically, pictorially, graphically, etc.

  1. Please briefly summarize the results of the measured student learning outcomes in the courses in this discipline, and then analyze what the results of the assessment process revealed.

  • Students are continuing to struggle with the following:
    •  An unusually large number of Electrical Engineering Technology majors were in this section, which might explain the fairly high marks in items #1 and #4 on previous page.  In past semesters,  those percentages have been lower.
    • Item #6 received less emphasis this semester than at times in the past due to a mismatch (which rarely occurs in Phys 1112, though it’s common in the other courses) that occurred between lab schedule and lecture schedule.  Mainly, mirrors and lenses (ideal for connecting graphical and computational ideas) were not covered close to the time the corresponding labs were scheduled.
    • With fairly large lab groups, it is a little difficult to make sure that each student is getting his or her own hand-on experience.  Lab results were quite good for the Oscilloscope and other experiments, but based on my observations of the students during lab time (and walking by their tables and asking a few questions of them) I’m inclined to say about 10% of the students learned little about taking data during our labs.
