Use of Results by Course

Category: Area A, Basic Skills          Course ENGL 1101 Discipline: English

1.    Please briefly explain which learning outcomes were met (please list these by number and through a brief description), and then also analyze what the results of the assessment process revealed.

  • Demonstrate rhetorical strategies by composing for different audiences, purposes, and contexts
  • Engage in the processes of writing through the drafting, revising and editing of their own work
  • Participate in writing as a social act through activities such as peer review, online discussions, small group and/or full class workshops
  • Participate in extemporaneous in-class writings that ask students to respond to various prompts

The Assessment subcommittee rated nearly all samples of student work as having achieved the stated course learning outcomes. On one hand, the assessment process revealed that our Composition I course is doing a very good job helping students achieve the University’s general education outcomes of 1) demonstrating an ability to analyze and interpret oral and written arguments and materials; and 2) demonstrating an ability to write and communicate effectively in various modes and media. At the same time, the assessment subcommittee felt that the “perfect” results in outcomes 1-3 indicated the degree to which the learning outcomes for ENGL 1101 as stated are more curriculum-driven, rather serving as measures of student learning achievement.

2.     Please list (both by number and by giving a brief description) which learning outcomes were not met, and then discuss these results and their implications in some detail.
