Use of Results by Course

Category: Area C2, Arts & Humanities        Course ARTS 2003  Discipline: Fine Arts

1.    Please briefly explain which learning outcomes were met (please list these by number and through a brief description), and then also analyze what the results of the assessment process revealed.

  • Identify major composers and performers and their contributions to Western music.
  • Aurally and visually identify instruments and various ensembles.
  • Distinguish the style elements of each major musical period (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century).

Students met benchmarks in all three learning outcomes, although at marginal rates for learning outcomes #1 & #2 (72% against a benchmark of 70%). Students achieved learning outcome #3 at a slightly higher rate (76% against a benchmark of 70%). This speaks, perhaps, to the challenge of thinking critically about music.

2.    Please list (both by number and by giving a brief description) which learning outcomes were not met, and then discuss these results and their implications in some detail.

3.    Please briefly summarize and comment on how you think you may use these assessment results.

In general, it seems that ARTS 2003, Music Appreciation, is a successful course in helping students achieve the university’s general education outcome of demonstrating an ability to make informed aesthetic judgments about the arts, such as visual, performing, and literary. Outcome #1 was assessed based on various in-class tests, whereas outcome #3 was assessed based on final exam performance. Future assessment of student learning outcome #1 might be better measured by the final exam. Performance on outcome #2 was based upon concert reports; a number of students earned a “0” on this assignment for failing to turn in a concert report. Faculty teaching this course will need to find ways to encourage full participation in the concert attendance portion of this course. Assessment of Area C2 courses pointed out a significant lack in organizational structure; since we currently have just one instructor teaching ARTS 2003, there is no easy way to coordinate a curriculum subcommittee. Starting in Fall, 2008, faculty teaching various Area C2 courses will meet regularly to coordinate how ARTS 2001, ARTS 2002, and ARTS 2003 articulate the University’s general education outcomes. Faculty will complete individual course assessment forms each semester as a part of the ongoing course assessment process. The Area C2 curriculum subcommittee will perform a formal course assessment during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Please list the dates of assessment committee meetings.

Since ARTS 2003 is taught by a single instructor, there were no scheduled assessment committee meetings in 2007-2008. The ARTS 2003 instructor did meet with the ETCMA Department Chair on several occasions to coordinate the course assessment.

Please explain how faculty will use the results.

  • The instructor will explore opportunities for increasing student participation in the concert attendance portion of the course.
  • Area C2 Curriculum Subcommittee will meet early in fall, 2008 for the first time.
  • Area C2 Curriculum Subcommittee will perform a formal course assessment during the 2011-2012 academic year.
