Use of Results by Course
Category: Area C2, Arts & Humanities Course ARTS 2001 Discipline: Fine Arts
1. Please briefly explain which learning outcomes were met (please list these by number and through a brief description), and then also analyze what the results of the assessment process revealed.
- Develop an understanding of the general nature of art through the study of aesthetics, or the philosophy of art.
- Learn to talk about art and make informed judgments through the study of art criticism skills.
- Identify different periods and styles of art through the study of the history of individual works.
Sampled student work demonstrated achievement of all three learning outcomes. This course is quite successful in helping students achieve the University general education outcome of demonstrating an ability to make informed aesthetic judgments about the arts, such as visual, performing, and literary.
2. Please list (both by number and by giving a brief description) which learning outcomes were not met, and then discuss these results and their implications in some detail.

3. Please briefly summarize and comment on how you think you may use these assessment results.
Learning outcome #2 could be reworded in such a way to foreground measurable learning outcomes. Assessment of Area C2 courses pointed out a significant lack in organizational structure; since we currently have just one instructor teaching ARTS 2001, there is no easy way to coordinate a curriculum subcommittee. Starting in Fall, 2008, faculty teaching various Area C2 courses will meet regularly to coordinate how ARTS 2001, ARTS 2002, and ARTS 2003 articulate the University’s general education outcomes. Faculty will complete individual course assessment forms each semester as a part of the ongoing course assessment process. The Area C2 curriculum subcommittee will perform a formal course assessment during the 2011-2012 academic year.
*Planned Use of Results
Please list the dates of assessment committee meetings.
Since ARTS 2001 is taught by a single instructor, there were no scheduled assessment committee meetings in 2007-2008. The ARTS 2001 instructor did meet with the ETCMA Department Chair on several occasions to coordinate the course assessment.
Please explain how faculty will use the results.
- Proposed Change to Learning Outcome #2:
- Think critically about art, as demonstrated through meaningful discussion of art and informed judgments of artistic works
- Area C2 Curriculum Subcommittee will meet early in fall, 2008 for the first time.
- Area C2 Curriculum Subcommittee will perform a formal course assessment during the 2011-2012 academic year.
