Properly organize/outline a speech or presentation.

  1. Demonstrate an ability to write and communicate effectively in various modes and media.

70% of  student outlines will demonstrate proper organization for a speech.

A curriculum subcommittee consisting of three instructors reviewed a 25% random sample of student speech outlines from 15 sections of the public speaking courses taught in Spring 2008, with an average class size of 25.  This method yielded a total sample of 78 student outlines. This curriculum subcommittee evaluated each outline, rating it satisfactory/unsatisfactory.

72% (56 out of 78) of student outlines demonstrated clear organization, including oral transitions and a minimum of three main points.

Support their positions and use a variety of support materials in their speeches;

  1. Demonstrate an ability to analyze and interpret oral and written arguments and materials
  2. Demonstrate an ability to write and communicate effectively in various modes and media.

 

70% of student speeches will demonstrate the use of three types of medium for support materials to demonstrate achievement of program outcomes.

44% (34 out of 78) of student presentations and reference pages  satisfactorily demonstrated a minimum of five sources from at least three types of media.

Prepare and present a speech that has an introduction, body, and conclusion that will hold interest, be easy to follow, and be factually accurate based on appropriate research

  1. Demonstrate an ability to analyze and interpret oral and written arguments and materials
  2. Demonstrate an ability to write and communicate effectively in various modes and media.

 

70% of student speeches will demonstrate achievement of program outcomes.

73.1% (57 out of 78) of student presentations demonstrated the ability to analyze and interpret arguments and write and communicate effectively in various modes of media in order to prepare and present an oral presentation with a clear introduction, body and conclusion.

70% of sampled student speeches will demonstrate student achievement of learning outcomes.

68% (53 out of 78) of student presentations demonstrated appropriateness of content and audience analysis through topic selection. Language use and use of visual aids.
