Academic Degree Program Assessment

School of Arts and Sciences

Use of Results Report

B.S. in Mathematics 2007--2008

1. Please list the Program Outcomes which were met and briefly discuss these.

  1. Math 3321: Have knowledge of definitions and terminology used in the field of analysis.
  2. Math 3321: Be able to prove classic theorems in the area of analysis.
  3. Math 4451: Critically read, abstract, and interpret a topic, at or above the level of a mathematics course numbered 4000 or above.
  4. Math 4451: Communicate orally and in writing in a clear and effective manner.

Outcomes 1 and 2 were met by a fairly comfortable margin and Outcomes 4 and 5 were met by an overwhelming margin.

2. If any Program Outcomes were not met, please list these and discuss these in more detail.

(3) Math 4440:  Apply mathematical principles, concepts, and techniques to new situations.

This outcome was measured with one problem on the Math 4440 final exam.  It is apparent from the extremely poor result in this outcome that more care needs to be taken in assessing this outcome in the future.  We note that this outcome is difficult to measure, because once a situation has been encountered, it is no longer “new”.

3. Chairs:

         A. Please discuss how you think that or anticipate that these results might be used.

These results will be presented to the mathematics faculty for discussion in Fall, 2008. Any changes deemed necessary in Program Outcome’s, Course Linkage, or Performance Criteria may be instituted for use in Spring, 2009.

         B. Please note below when you are tentatively planning to discuss these results and the use of these results with your faculty and with others.

August, 2008

4. Dates of Meetings:

Please list below the dates of meetings at which the use of assessment results were discussed and also briefly summarize the discussions and decisions.
