Streaming Media Server

The Division of Information Technology provides support for Streaming Media via a Real Networks Helix Server 100.  The system supports a variety of streaming media formats, including Windows Media, Quicktime, MP3, ACC, ACC+ as well as the Real™ Networks Audio and Video formats.  Storage space is not unlimited, so please limit the use of the server to media currently in use. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the IT Helpdesk at 678-915-4357.

Adding media to the server

The easiest way to place media on the streaming media server is via Hornet Connect. All faculty members have access to the streaming video server automatically. Simply upload your streaming media onto the server to begin sharing your video. Additionally, if you are on-campus, you can access the streaming video server directly by mapping the server as a network drive.

Instructions for mapping a network drive:

Windows XP/2000

1) Click on the “My Computer” icon on your desktop
2) Select “Tools > Map Network Drive” from the drop down menu on the top of the “My Computer” window
3) In the “Map Network Drive” window, select a drive letter for the network drive. (“M” is suggested)
4) Type the following in the box labeled “Folder”: “\\media\networkID”, where “networkID” is your SPSU email before the @spsu.edu.
5) If this is your office computer, check the box “reconnect at login” to automatically map the drive when the computer is restarted.
6) Click “Finish” to map the drive.
The streaming media server should now appear under “My Computer” as a network drive.

 Mac OSX:

1) From the Finder, select "Connect to Server..." from the Go Menu
2) In the box that appears, type the following server address: “smb://media/networkID”, where “networkID” is your SPSU email before the @spsu.edu
3) In the SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication window enter workgroup/domain: SPSU

      Username: networkID (“networkID”@spsu.edu)
      Password: *******

Media Playback

Once your media is uploaded to the streaming media server, you can share your media with the world. Use the following URLs to link to your streaming media:

Microsoft Windows Media files (.asf, .wma, .wmv):
http://media.spsu.edu/asxgen/networkID/filename

(where networkID is your SPSU email before the @spsu.edu)

Real Media files (.rm, .rvb, .rp, .rt):
http://media.spsu.edu/ramgen/networkID/filename
(where networkID is your SPSU email before the @spsu.edu)
