HornetMail Implementation Schedule
Mirapoint engineers are responsible for migrating all existing user mail from the current HornetMail system to the new. They are assuring us that there will be no loss of e-mail and a minimal amount of down time.
The conversion process will be faster and easier, however, if users take some tme to delete any unwanted messages from webmail prior to leaving for the semester break. Also, as calendar and contact informaiton will not be migrated from the old webmail, users should copy any needed calendar and contact data before the conversion as well.
Several days before the conversion DoIT staff will disable the mail account and password system. This is to provide a stable system for the Mirapoint engineers to operate with.
Mirapoint engineers will begin transferring mail data during the last week of December. On January 3rd, 2007, the old mail system will be halted and a final synchronization will occur. During this time we will not receive incoming mail, nor will users be able to check or send SPSU e-mail. Incoming mail will not be lost, however -- merely deferred! We anticipate this outage to last 8-12 hours, but we will do our best to minimize it.
After the final synchronization and configuration period, we will come up on the new system. All existing names (mail.spsu.edu, webmail.spsu.edu) and IP addresses will remain the same, so there should be minimal interruption of e-mail. All deferred mail will begin to arrive. The new webmail interface will be active at this time.
Once the new HornetMail is active, DoIT networking personnel will begin to convert and test our account maintenance tools. During this conversion process, there may be several days where the account tools will be unavailable.
Calendaring will be available on or before February 1:
The final step will be the implementation of shared and group calendars. We want to be sure that the system is functioning properly for e-mail before we add the calendar functionality. We will announce and provide calendaring capabilities by February 1st.
