HornetMail Changes
The core of the new HornetMail system is a Mirapoint Secure Messaging appliance. Unlike previous SPSU mail systems which were based on open-source software and a cluster of servers, the new system is a proprietary product, purchased as a complete system from a manufacturer.
While this model has significant advantages (more reliable and secure, better technical support, streamlined maintainance and upgrades), there are also some trade-offs (less flexible/cutomizable, costs are per-user).
With this in mind, please review this list of changes coming with the new HornetMail system...
First, the Good News (features, upgrades, etc.)
| Improved spam filtering |
Several layers of spam prevention/detection with constantly updated rules and heuristics |
| Personal spam white/black lists |
From the webmail interface, all users can keep personal lists of sites/senders from whom they do not want to receive mail, or from whom they always want to receive mail even if the system believes a message to be spam |
| Shared calendaring |
Individuals users can, by request, be given a personal calendar that can be viewed or even updated by other users on the system according to permissions that you decide |
| Group calendaring |
Departments, schools, committees and other organizations can, by request, be given a calendar that is specific to that group and viewed by others. Unlike a shared calendar, a group calendar has no single owner and so is persistent if an employee leaves the University's employ |
Now, the trade-offs. PLEASE READ:
| Student access ONLY through webmail |
Due to licensing costs, students will no longer be able to access their SPSU e-mail accounts via POP or IMAP, but only through the webmail interface |
| E-mail cannot be archived via webmail |
At the current time, there is no archive capability in the webmail client. E-mail can either be pulled off the system via POP/IMAP or forwarded to another e-mail account. However, the DoIT does plan to implement a stand-alone archival function at a later date |
| No student calendar via webmail |
Due to licensing costs, there will not be a student calendar in the new webmail |
| Calendar & contact information cannot be migrated |
During the conversion process, all existing e-mails will be moved from the old HornetMail to the new. However, for technical reasons, existing webmail Calendar and Address items cannot be migrated to the new webmail system. Please be sure to copy down your Address and Calendar items prior to the January 3rd conversion date! |
