Services for Faculty
The Information Technology (IT) Division provides computing and communications infrastructure, technology services, and support for the SPSU community.
Services for Faculty include:
Getting Started
The first step to getting connected to SPSU's IT resources is to have your department's administrative assistant complete an Accounts Request Form (available at https://accounts.spsu.edu/wrappers/ProtectedDataAccessForm.pl). This form must be signed by your department chair and returned to the Information Technology Division office in H243 before your email/network ID will be created. After completing the account request, your initial account information and other login data will be given to your department's administrative assistant. For security reasons, please change your initial password immediately. If you have any questions about the status of your account request, please call Christine Jenkins 678-915-7346, if you have technical issues, please call the IT helpdesk at 678-915-4357.

Email/Network ID
Your SPSU email/network ID gives you access to the SPSU email system, classroom/laboratory computers, Hornet Connect, departmental web space, network storage, and many other services. SPSU uses email extensively for campus announcements and other official communication. Access to SPSU email is available from off campus via an internet connection and web browser via the address: http://webmail.spsu.edu
Your Email/Network ID password, vacation/away messages, aliases, forwarding, and other features can be managed via the IT Accounts web tool, located at http://accounts.spsu.edu Problems with your account should be reported to the IT Helpdesk at 678-915-4357 (HELP).

Classroom Technology
Many of the classrooms at SPSU are equipped with computers, projectors, smartboards, document cameras, and other technology. Technical problems with classrooms should be reported immediately to the IT Helpdesk at 678-915-4357 (HELP). It is strongly recommended that inspect your classroom(s) prior to the start of the semester to determine if you will need assistance with the technology, or if you need a room with different resources. If you would like to schedule an orientation or have any questions about how to use the equipment, contact the IT Helpdesk at 678-915-4357 (HELP). Please report any problems with the classrooms as soon as they occur, as the next person to use the room may depend on the classroom's equipment for their lecture, even if you don't. Rooms should be locked after use, and any missing equipment or suspicious activity should be reported to University Police (678-915-5555) as soon as possible.

Campus Wide Software
Information Technology manages software license management servers and classroom/lab computers for the SPSU campus. Many applications are available for installation across campus. A listing of software available as campus-wide licenses can be found at: http://www.spsu.edu/infotech/software.html We are always looking to enhance the access of software on campus, so if you have any suggestions for additional software that would benefit from a site-license, please contact David Stone (dstone@spsu.edu).

Work-At-Home Software Distribution
The Division of Information Technology maintains a software depot where students, faculty and staff can download and install specially-licensed software on their personal systems for free (certain restrictinos apply -- please carefully read the licensing informaiton for each package before installing). This software may be downloaded from http://software.spsu.edu
Note: For access to the doIT software distribution system from off-campus or via Hornet Wireless you must use the Hornet Connect VPN system.
BANNER
SPSU uses BANNER for student records and classroom scheduling. Faculty members and Academic Affairs staff use BANNER to generate lists of students enrolled in a course, enter grades, make room reservations, and to generate the course bulletin for each semester. Students use BANNER to check their grades, register for classes, pay tuition, and view their academic transcript.

Web Space
Most academic departments provide faculty members with web space for course syllabi and other academic materials. The policies for web space vary from department; please have your department's administrative assistant submit a work order for web access. If you need assistance getting started with your web space, contact the IT helpdesk at: 678-915-4357

Network Storage
Faculty members have access to a network storage system (titan) that permits the temporary storage of course materials on a server available from most classrooms on campus. This allows faculty to reduce the amount of materials that have to be physically carried to and from the classroom. In most classrooms, you log into the computer via the “SPSU” domain option (listed at the bottom of the log in dialog box), and then type “\\titan” (no apostrophes) into either Windows or Internet Explorer. A folder with your email ID should be visible in the Explorer window.
Note: For access to your titan drive from off-campus or via Hornet Wireless you must use the Hornet Connect VPN system.

turnitin.com
Plagiarism detection is now available to SPSU faculty through a service called Turnitin. This is an online service, so no software is required. After a document is submitted, an originality report will be generated by Turnitin that details the quantity of plagiarism, with links to documents found online or in a local database that contain similar passages. This service can also check for originality of equations and programs. Send an email to Jonathan Gilliam ( jgilliam@spsu.edu) if you would like to start using this service.

Vista (replaces WebCT Campus Edition)
Vista is a tool that facilitates the creation of Web-based educational environments. It is a medium for online learning. It provides tools for course management, communication, and collaboration. Vista can be used to create online courses, or to publish materials that supplement existing courses. There is minimal technical expertise required from the instructor (a knowledge of HTML or a graphical web-page editor is helpful). Vista is entirely web-based. Campus computers should already be configured with the proper version of JAVA for Vista . In order to request an account for Vista, or to learn more about Vista please visit http://eu.spsu.edu/distancelearning/faculty.html

Hornet Connect
Hornet Connect http://connect.spsu.edu is a web based tool that provides SPSU students, faculty, and staff with the ability to connect to campus Information Technology infrastructure. Students and faculty can post web pages and images from off campus locations and access their network storage drives (the “Z”, student, drive, and the “titan” faculty network drive). Library collections that are not typically accessible from off-campus locations are available through the Hornet Connect tool.
This web based tool provides students remote access to:
library resources that previously could only be accessed from on-campus locations
-
campus network storage drives
-
web servers to host content
- campus webmail
- SPSU forum discussion board

Wireless network
Wireless internet access is available throughout most of campus. The IT wireless network requires the use of an 802.1x protocol with EAP-TTLS Authentication (native to some computer systems and network cards). A software client to support wireless is available for SPSU faculty, staff, and students in the IT Workshop in H-242.
