              This list is provided to help the SPSU community better understand the projects we’re actively implementing.  Due to fluid campus priorities, personnel changes, seasonal workload fluctuations, emergencies, budget, product availability, etc., timelines and projects are subject to change.  Projects are listed roughly in priority order.  Priorities are determined by IT interaction with project stakeholders, UITAC/Sr. Staff/Deans Council interaction and IT resource availability, among other factors.

Mirapoint e-mail / shared calendar appliance

Provide campus-wide shared calendaring platform via web and Outlook.  Also greatly simplifies e-mail system and support.  Should provide significantly enhanced anti-spam capabilities.  Costs mainly covered by recouped anti-virus and anti-spam dollars

Some impact.  Will require users to learn/use a new web mail interface, but interface is well designed so should not pose a serious re-training issue.  Existing users of Outlook/Eudora should not notice a difference.  Some e-mail down time during conversion/migration

Most Academic labs and classrooms use A/D for student workstation access.  The volume of users has increased dramatically and the current servers are old and must be replaced.  In the process, more A/D servers will be added for increased reliability

Complete overhaul including installation on new hardware, increasing A/D servers from 3 to 4, migrating additional FSMOs to increase redundancy. No user impact anticipated.  Awaiting completion of SPSUNET domain retirement project.

Campus electronic sign pilot By end of Summer Infrastructure Provide a consistent, centrally managed system of large LCD panels for dissemination of campus information.  Data will be organized by department for "targeted" displays; general campus information will also be dsiplayed.  Initially, users will submit their data to the Student Acitivities department who will manage the sign data.  Pilot largely funded by student Tech Fee project

Elevator emergency phone conversions By end of Summer Infrastructure Currently elevators are still using expensive GTA phone circuits.  Also, these curcuits are on overhead cables which are slated to be removed as part of campus beautification project.  This project will convert these lines to cheaper, undeground Deltacom lines Must coordinate each elevator with its mfg. rep (i.e. Kone, Otis, Thyssenkrupp, etc.) as well as Facilities and University Police.  Will take time to complete.

Internal Instant Messaging server

Infrastructure Many workstations and servers have built-in mailing capabilities.  Spyware and viruses can use this capability to spread unwanted spam and illegal content, often resulting in complaints against the campus.  Closing down outbound SMTP is therefore an important security step for the campus
