Internship Approval Process
To get an internship approved, you begin by discussing your internship interests with the internship coordinator. He or she may already have some internship possibilities for you. But this is not guaranteed.
You may need to find your own internship. You may even prefer to find your own internship. Either way, you must get your internship approved, a process that consists of several steps. These steps are described in the following procedure.
Before You Begin
Before you can get an internship approved, you must have already completed at least 27 hours of courses or expect to have completed that many hours by the end of the semester in which you are seeking approval.
Approval Procedure
To get an internship approved, complete the following procedure.
- One semester before you plan to begin an internship, meet with the internship coordinator to discuss your internship interests.
Rule: Your proposal must be turned in by the ninth week of the semester before you plan to begin the internship. - Write a proposal that describes the internship you seek. In the proposal, you should
- describe the types of work you will consider
- include a short summary of your work history and course of study
- include a copy of your resume
- Give your proposal to the Chair of the English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts (ETCMA) Department for his or her approval.
Result: The department Chair will review your proposal and inform you about any needed changes. - Does the Chair of the ETCMA Department approve your proposal?
- If yes, the program Chair will ask the internship coordinator to begin helping you to find an internship. Continue to step 5.
- If no, revise your proposal according to the program Chair's suggestions. Return to step 3.
- Interview with the companies that the internship coordinator suggests as well as companies that you find on your own.
Note: The internship coordinator will do all that he or she can to help you find an internship, but you are responsible for finding one. - Inform the internship coordinator when you have found an internship.
- Write a letter to the company that will sponsor your internship, outlining the terms of the internship and requesting that the company return a signed copy to the internship coordinator.
- Give copies of the letter and your approved proposal to the ETCMA department assistant.
Result:- You will receive by mail an approval form that assigns you an advisor.
- The department assistant will register you for either 3 or 6 hours of IDC 7603: Internship during regular registration. The number of hours will depend on how many hours you have been approved for.
