Graduate Assistantships
Our department offers a limited number of graduate assistantships. Generally, this is three positions each semester, fall and spring. In order to be eligible for an assistantship, a student must be fully admitted to a graduate degree program (this does not include certificates) and must be enrolled full time, 9 credit hours.
The English Technical Communication and Media Arts (ETCMA) department assigns duties to Graduate Assistants (GA's.) Duties assigned to graduate assistants may include assisting faculty, supporting program activities, and assisting administrative staff. The tasks to be done will be determined by the appropriate faculty or staff person, to whom the GA will be reporting. Graduate assistants work a minimum of 15 hours per week but no more than 20. This, too, will be determined by the supervising graduate faculty member or staff member.
Students working as a GA must be enrolled for at least 8 hours and will receive a $1500 stipend for a fall or spring semester plus a tuition reduction.
In-state students will be required to pay $25 of tuition plus fees, and the remainder of tuition is waived. Non-resident (out-of-state or international) students pay full in-state tuition and fees, and the non-resident portion of tuition is waived.
Also, graduate assistants are required to purchase insurance through Pearce and Pearce Company each semester, currently at $472 per semester. If a student can prove adequate insurance coverage, this fee is waived. You can view additional information regarding student insurance at http://www.studentinsurance.com/
A graduate assistantship is the only type of aid offered by the ETCMA department. For additional information on financial aid, you will need to contact that department directly, 678-915-7290. Gary Bush is the Director, 678-915-7468, gbush@spsu.edu. The website address is http://www.spsu.edu/home/services/finaid.html.
