Which program is right for me?

Wondering about the differences between the certificate programs and the degree program? Well, here's an example that might help explain them:

After taking one or two online courses in the certificate program, you might decide that you would rather meet with your class face-to-face, or you might want to take a class that is only offered to M.S. students. For instance, usability testing is offered only to students in the master's degree program because it is taught in the Usability Center on campus.

The chart below is a comparison of some of the features of the graduate certificate and master's degree programs. Review this list to get a better idea of how the two programs differ.

Graduate Certificate Program   Master’s Degree Program
• You take all of your courses completely online.   • You can take courses that are campus-based, completely online, or “hybrid” (partially online and in the classroom).
• Online classes offer you convenience: there is no travel involved and your courses are accessible from any computer.   • Attending classes on campus allows you the experience of hands-on learning in state-of-the art labs.
• After you earn your certificate, you can continue on in the Advanced Graduate Certificate Program.   • A greater variety of courses is offered to students in the degree program.
• GRE test scores are not required for application to the certificate program.   • GRE test scores are required for application to the master’s degree program (or, with 2 years’ relevant work experience, submission of a portfolio for review instead of the GRE).
• Upon successful completion of the graduate certificate and an advanced graduate certificate, students also receive the master’s degree.   • Students in the degree program can take up to 9 credit hours of courses outside the ETCMA department (with approval of graduate program coordinator).
