Gould Award for excellence in teaching technical communication. This year, The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has selected her as a recipient of the 2009 Regents' Teaching Excellence Award. She came to Southern Polytechnic after working for more than a decade as a copywriter in advertising and public relations. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English from Georgia State University and her B.A. in English Honors from the University of North Carolina, where she was a cum laude graduate and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Barnum teaches a variety of courses in the graduate and undergraduate    programs in technical communication and information design, including Usability Testing, a course she developed after successfully seeking funding for a state-of-the-art usability lab for Southern Polytechnic.  Through the Usability Center at Southern Polytechnic, Dr. Barnum works with clients to explore the user experience of products, including software, websites, Web applications, and e-learning tools.
