Dr. Kenneth T. Rainey
Kenneth T. Rainey, Professor
of English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts, taught technical writing,
document design, graphics, multimedia, technical writing and editing, and
research methods in technical communication, as well as American
literature and drama appreciation. He held a Ph.D. in American
literature from Ohio State University.
Dr. Rainey was a Fellow of the
Society for Technical Communication (STC). He served as Assistant for
Academic and Research Programs to the President of the STC and education,
training, and professional development program stem manager for the STC
Annual Conference, as well as President of the Atlanta Chapter, STC. He
received the Jay R. Gould Award for excellence in teaching technical
communication from STC. He received the Distinguished Chapter Service
Award in 2000.
He consulted for such
public and private agencies as the Tennessee State Board of Regents, the
Tennessee State Department of Adult Education, AT&T Fitel, and Bell
Northern Research.
Dr. Rainey published
articles on composition and rhetoric, American culture, and technical
communication in such journals as "ATQ: The American Transcendental
Quarterly," "Journal of Technical Writing and Communication," "IEEE
Transactions on Professional Communication," "The Technical Writing
Teacher" (now "Technical Communication Quarterly"), and "Technical
Communication," the journal of the Society for Technical Communication. In
1996 he edited a special issue on education of "Technical
Communication." He won a merit award in 1992 and an excellence award in
2000 in the Atlanta Chapter Technical Publications Competition.
At Southern Polytechnic State
University, he was a member of the Faculty Senate, where he was chair
of the Documents Review Subcommittee; the Instructional Technology
Advisory Committee; and the Advisory Committee on Parking and Lighting. He
won the university's Outstanding Faculty Award in 1992 and in 2001 and
was "Teacher of the Year" in 2001-2001. In the Humanities and Technical
Communication Department, he was Coordinator of Student Interns.
Dr. Rainey was a member of the
Association of Teachers of Technical Writing, Conference on College
Composition and Communication, Society for Technical Communication, and
the National Council of Teachers of English. He is listed in "Who's Who in
America," "Who's Who in American Education," "Who's Who Among America's
Teachers,"and "Who's Who in the South and Southwest."
In 1997 and 1999, he was
guest professor at Fachhochschule Magdeburg on fellowships from the
Deutscher Akademishcer Austausdienst (DAAD). In the summers of 2001 and
2002, he taught at the Hochschule Anhalt in Koethen, Germany.
