ACCOUNTANT I (Fiscal Affairs)                                                                                                   08–280

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a professional accounting position. The Accountant I is responsible for performing accounting functions and financial management reporting in conformance with generally accepted accounting principles. Compiles financial information, processes journal entries into various accounts, and reconciles reports and financial data. Responsibilities may also include some routine collection activities under the direction of the supervisor. The Accountant I reports to the Assistant Controller of Daily Operations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.       Compiles financial information and assists in the preparation of reports.

2.       Reconciles bank accounts.

3.       Reconciles sub-ledgers to the general ledger and resolves differences using PeopleSoft.

4.       Supports accounts payable function.

5.       Supports grant billing and reconciliation.

6.       Reconciles endowment accounts.

7.       Provides information to faculty, staff, students, and individuals or organizations outside of the university; explains accounting transactions; resolves accounting issues and discrepancies.

8.       Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.

9.       Performs other duties as assigned.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

1.       Considerable knowledge of fund accounting and generally accepted accounting principles.

2.       Excellent oral and written communication skills.

3.       Experience with PeopleSoft financials.

4.       Banner experience preferred.

5.       Strong computer skills are essential.

6.       Must be able to work with different file formats and reconcile them to the accounting records.

7.       Ability to work independently in an assigned area of responsibility with little direct supervision and cooperation with administrators and related functions.

8.       Intermediate knowledge of Excel required.

9.       Ability to meet and serve students, staff and faculty tactfully and effectively, and maintain effective working relations with other employees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's degree and two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of training required; or a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, supplemented by experience in accounting, banking or accounts receivable and collections is preferred. Experience in a university setting is a plus.

 

DAYS/HOURS: Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm

 

SALARY:           Commensurate with experience
