The Department of Housing and Residence Life currently employs over 50 student staff
members. Current student staff positions include: Resident Assistant, Desk Assistant,
and Student Assistant.
The purpose of the Resident Assistant (RA) is to enhance the quality of life in the
residential communities while supporting the academic mission of the university for
the students in that community. The position requires an individual who is flexible
enough to assume a variety of roles as dictated by the changing needs of students.
It is crucial that an individual be able to relate well to others and handle administrative
responsibilities. The RA is more than just a friendly presence; she/he is the crucial
link in creating an environment in which students develop independence and learn to
live cooperatively with others.
The Desk Assistant (DA) is an integral member of the Housing and Residence Life team,
serving as one of the initial representatives of the Howell and Norton Residence Halls
and Hornet Village Suites. The DA works at the residence hall or suite front desk,
assisting in the administration, service and security of the community. The DA, often
the first contact to residents, visitors, and persons outside the residential community,
must demonstrate professionalism and customer service at all times, while also responding
quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Housing and Residence Life is seeking
candidates with effective leadership ability including: personal maturity, dependability,
motivation, initiative, integrity, responsibility, discretion and strong interpersonal
skills.
Our Student Assistants hold more of an administrative role within our office, assisting
with the day to day operations. They are the ones who keep our offices open, greet
residents when they walk in, answer phones, and manage any questions our residents
have about our facilities, payments, roommates, etc.
