Our History

Housing was first offered at SPSU in the early 1960s, when our first dormitory, Norton Hall opened. SPSU later opened another dormitory, Howell Hall, during the same decade. Dormitories are now referred to as residence halls because the goal of on-campus housing is for residents to feel at home and not just a part of communal sleeping quarters.

In order to meet the rising demand of on-campus housing, SPSU opened its first apartment community, University Commons, in 1997. As the student population increased, it became evident that the housing options needed to increase as well. As a result, University Courtyard, an additional apartment community, was established in 2004.

The Housing and Residence Life Department understands the importance of meeting the needs of our students. This initiated the renovation of Howell and Norton Halls in 2005.

As time progressed, the SPSU student population continued to increase significantly. In turn, other housing options needed to be created to accommodate the demand. Housing and Residence Life increased their on-campus living options in 2010 by adding Hornet Village, which is a Suite-style living community, as well as University Columns, a special interest housing community established for fraternities, sororities, and other special interest student groups. Housing and Residence Life is proud of the housing development growth over the past ten years.

Once known as a commuter school, SPSU now has the capacity to occupy over 30% of our students here on campus, making us their home away from home!
