Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to take the MAT (Math Apptitude Test)?

Prior to registering for Southern Polytechnic’s mathematics courses, all students who have not been awarded credit for both Southern Polytechnic courses, Math 1111 (College Algebra) and Math 1113 (Pre-Calculus), are required to take the Math Assessment Test (MAT). The exam will be administered at your Orientation program.  If you do not have credit for Math 1111 and 1113 and have not taken the MAT, you will not be able to enroll in a mathematics course. The MAT scores are used to place you in an appropriate starting point in SPSU’s mathematics sequence. The 90-minute test covers Algebra and Trigonometry.  When you report for testing, please bring a photo ID (such as your driver’s license) and two sharpened No. 2 pencils. You are not permitted to use a calculator while taking the MAT. The test may only be taken once.

If you are not sure about the mathematics credit you have received on the day the MAT is given, you should go ahead and take the test. A low score on the test will not remove credit that you have already been awarded.

A score of at least 3 on the Advanced Placement Calculus AB test is good for credit for Math 2253 (Calculus I). A score of at least 3 on the Advanced Placement Calculus BC test is good for credit for both Math 2253 (Calculus I), and Math 2254 (Calculus II). If you have achieved either of these scores, then you are not required to take the Math Assessment Test (MAT). Be sure that your scores have been forwarded to SPSU so that credit can be awarded.

The MAT will be offered on Day One of the two-day sessions and is part of the orientation schedule.  It is also offered at 8am and 12pm on August 14th for those who chose to attend the T-5 or T-6 sessions.

Why do I have an Orientation Hold on my banner account?

All new students have an orientation hold on their accounts.  This hold will remain on your account until you attend a new student orientation session.  At these sessions you will have the opportunity to talk with an academic advisor.  At that time, we will remove your orientation hold so that you will be able to register for class.

If you can not attend orientation, your hold will be removed the day before classes begin each semester.

What is an immunization hold?

In the State of Georgia, University students must get certain immunizations before they attend.  Your doctor should be able to tell you which immunizations you have already had and which you still need.  Complete the immunization form that you were given with your application and turn that in to Julie Scala, SPSU’s Nurse.  You have a one semester grace period to get that form turned in.  You will be able to register your first semester without having it turned in.

When can I talk to an academic advisor?

Part of the schedule at orientation is academic advising.  You will be dismissed from the general assembly of students to go with a professor from your academic department.

I am an ECORE student. What do I do?

ECORE students do not have to attend orientation.  If you have an orientation hold and are only planning on taking ecore classes call us and we will remove the hold.  If you are taking one or more classes on campus, you have to attend orientation.  If you would like to, and we advise it if possible, you can attend orientation.
