Julie Newell
M.A., Ph.D., University of Wisconsin - Madison
Coordinator of the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program
Teacher of the Year 1998-99
Why study STS?
"The program gives every student at least one core class to think about the ways science and
technology impact society and culture and vice versa. In Spring 2002 Technological Disasters is
back by popular demand, with other courses on Atoms in America, Science and Religion,
Technoterrorism, and Great Rivers."
Who studies it?
"You meet a mix of students from different majors in these classes, which gives you a chance
to meet new people and do group work outside your major."
One-stop shopping
"I use WebCT software to create one-stop shopping for my students. In my history class,
students can go online and take 10-point, open-book, multiple-choice quizzes, get a score
immediately, and use the feedback to get the most out of their learning. If you miss class, you
can print out handouts and my PowerPoint presentations at home."
Study tools
"There's an analysis tool on my web site I developed to encourage students to think about ways
their professional decisions and actions will affect real people in real ways."
Science pays
"In 2002 I'll use a National Science Foundation grant to finish the research and rework my
dissertation on the formation of the American geological community. American geologists were
the first scientists in America who figured out how to make a living being scientists. They had
to create the models and institutions of professional science, and their experience influences
how we look at science in our culture and how it gets funded. The subject is a great deal of fun,
because these guys had to convince the legislature that they were doing something practical."
Spare-time pursuits
"Gardening. I read voraciously, especially Orson Scott Card's historical fiction fantasy. And I
enjoy spending time with my daughter, who just started kindergarten."
