Carine Kroko
Bachelor of Architecture 2000
How has your career evolved since you graduated?
After working with The Preston Partnership for close to two years on residential apartments for
Post, I took a position with CDH Partners in Marietta. We specialize in designs for churches,
hospitals, and schools.
Tell us about your current project.
Right now I'm working on a three-story addition to a church. Compared to what I did before, the
church is a more complex, detailed project that requires more creative problem solving. As you
develop the plan, the client decides to make changes, like adding or changing rooms, and when
we submit it for the city permit that process may require other changes.
How did Southern Poly prepare you for these challenges?
The technical courses, like our studios and code classes, are hands-on and require applying what
you learn. These really help you see where you have a problem in your design and where to look
for answers.
What are your future plans?
This is my second year of an internship, and I'll need one more before I can take exams to get
certified. I want to work a little more in the United States on different building types for a
global understanding of architecture. Then I'll return home to West Africa.
Share your best memory of Southern Poly.
Getting involved with the University. Architecture is a 24-hour program, and participating in
the Student Ambassador program helped me contribute to the improvement of the entire campus
community.
Any advice for incoming students?
Have a plan. Define what you really want to do, and discuss it with a counselor. Then really
apply yourself. The school is challenging, but a plan will help you succeed.
