Tom Fallon
M.S., Electrical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET)
Teaches telecommunications: the ability to communicate over long distances with an electronic base
Experience counts
"Before coming to Southern Poly in 1996, I worked in industry -- on network infrastructure, and
then for Atlanta-based firms in such positions as network management, bid estimation, and training."
People matter
"I enjoy interacting with people who like to tackle hard problems. If you give our students a
problem they can get their "hands on," it's an amazing thing to watch. By coming at it from
several angles, they get to see the big picture."
What big picture?
"The work I'm doing the most these days is related to network security and application
development. It helps to understand all the various layers from the fiber optic or copper-based
cable to securing the database. You might be an expert in securing data, but if you don't
understand how to transport it, you can't transport it securely."
Challenges never end
"Probably the most challenging aspect is the nature of telecommunications itself. It's very
dynamic. Our degree opens a door and provides the foundation to step out in industry, but it's up
to the individual to dig deeper and deeper through lifetime learning."
ECET distinctions
"ECET offers three fairly diverse undergraduate degrees: ECET, computer engineering technology,
and telecommunications engineering technology. Our people-oriented faculty and staff are experts
in their fields, and since we are technology oriented, we put a lot of emphasis on the labs and
projects. For the highly motivated individual, Southern Poly is a great school."
Spare-time pursuits
"Playing with my 4-and-1/2-year-old daughter, Katie, or getting beaten in cards by my wife."
