Josè Alvarado

Student, Industrial Engineering Technology

Life before Southern Poly

I was born in Mexico, but moved to Los Angeles California when I was only 4 months old. When I was 12 years old, my family and I moved to Atlanta, GA so I have 3 hometowns to go by.

How I chose SPSU

Southern Poly was one of the last schools I looked at. After considering schools like Georgia Tech and Georgia State, I decided to attend Southern Poly because of the caring atmosphere the staff and faculty showed. Unlike other schools, at Southern Poly you get a lot more attention from your professors, and the students become real close because of the small class size.

Why Industrial Engineering Technology?

It is great because it lets my mathematical skills be put to use, but I can also interact with people. I also enjoy being efficient in my every day life so it was definitely a perfect fit. I am currently a part time intern at UPS and am part of the Industrial Engineering-Work Measurement group.  It has been a great experience working for UPS because a lot of information I have learned at Southern Poly has helped me understand the major concepts of the work environment I am in.

My favorite class

There are so many classes that have been great in the Industrial Engineering department, but the class that has put me in the place that I am in right now is the Work Measurement course. Other schools do not offer the course because it is an older method of Industrial Engineering, but it is still being used by companies today. In fact, that is one of the reasons that I got hired by UPS was because of that course.

My favorite place on campus

The Student Center is my favorite place because, being a commuter student, I can meet up with my friends and hang out before class. It is just a good meeting point for everyone, and there is always someone you know walking through.

My community

Well right now, Delta Rho is one of the best things that has happened to me while at SPSU. It is a group of guys who share the same passion for sports and brotherhood. It is pretty cool to have started something because we feel like a part of SPSU history. Delta Rho is currently unofficial, but we want something more to evolve from it because we all share the same views about what we want it to be, a true unified brotherhood of well rounded men.

That is why SPSU is so different, there are all kinds of possibilities on campus to make it your own and create the best four years (or 5) of your life. For me it was a bunch of guys with the same views, for others its Ultimate Frisbee, Greek Organizations, Rock Climbing, Basketball, Baseball, etc. When you come to SPSU make it your own.
