The Software Engineering program

Why study Software Engineering at SPSU?
The first undergraduate program of its kind in Georgia, Software Engineering appeals to students who like the challenge of designing software systems to specific requirements. Our program teaches students to systematically apply computer science and mathematical principles to software development, and to work in teams to deliver high-quality products -- all in preparation for the tasks and environments they will face as professional software engineers.

About the program
The Software Engineering degree developed from Southern Poly's role in Yamacraw, an economic development initiative that promotes Georgia's leadership in designing high-bandwidth communications systems and components. The program focuses on particular applied tracks such component-based software, which emphasizes the concept of reuse, and embedded systems software, the software used in cell phones and flight control. Students may earn a Yamacraw certificate by completing at least two Yamacraw-related courses and demonstrating leadership in the next generation of hardware/software infrastructure.

The faculty
The faculty are experts who stay current on the growing trends in software engineering. Their experiences range from real-life practice to the latest research studies.

Are there learning opportunities outside the classroom?
SPSU holds yearly Colloquia events, which bring top IT scientists to campus to lecture on themes such as "scalability issues in mobile intermittently synchronized databases" and "object oriented modeling and the process interaction approach to simulation." Our students also join computing and software engineering clubs on campus, such as AMA, a professional society for students planning careers in computing. The groups local activities include tutoring sessions, peer sessions, local conferences, and social activities.

What can I do with an Software Engineering degree?
Our graduates go on to serve the complex software development needs of many major companies and specialize in areas such as wireless communications, telecommunications, and embedded systems.

Will I find employment?
Major companies headquartered in Atlanta, such as BellSouth and Cingular Wireless, regularly recruit graduates of the Software Engineering program at Southern Polytechnic.
