The Mechanical Engineering Technology program

Why study Mechanical Engineering Technology at SPSU?
In today's marketplace, there are very few industries that don't employ mechanical engineers and technologists. At Southern Polytechnic, we provide the level of instruction and the cutting-edge facilities that produce experts in the field of Mechanical Engineering Technology. Our graduates consistently award us high marks for the relevance and quality of our academic program.

About the program
At Southern Polytechnic, we develop mechanical engineering technologists who can apply relevant engineering principles to today's industrial problems. Our bachelor's degree programs emphasize necessary theoretical concepts and practical laboratory experience in manufacturing processes and techniques, instrumentation and controls, and equipment and machinery performance evaluation. Instruction takes place in some of the most cutting edge laboratories and classrooms the Southeast has to offer.

The faculty
Our faculty understand that in order to be credible in the classroom, they must be experts in the field. Collectively, they have years of experience in the professional realm, and maintain memberships and advising positions in professional organizations including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE), to name a few.

Are there learning opportunities outside the classroom?
Under the advisement of faculty mentors, several local chapters of national professional organizations are active on campus. They include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning, and the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. Our students also develop mechanical engineering projects -- one of the latest being a super-mileage vehicle -- to present at national competitions.

What can I do with a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree?
Depending upon their specialty at SPSU, graduates may find employment in steel production and fabrication, aircraft and automobile fabrication and assembly, maintenance supervision, machinery and machine part design, power generation plant engineering, and more.

Will I find employment?
There are very few industries that do not employ mechanical engineers and technologists. With the help of your professors, who actively assist graduates in the employment process, you should have a variety of options available when it comes to finding a job.
